Speaker Spotlight: Marcus Cohn

I’m very excited to be presenting at WordCamp LA. While I’m based in NYC, I’m frequently in LA and am thrilled to meet the LA WP community.

I run creative and website design and development at 2tor, a company who partners with preeminent institutions of higher education to deliver rigorous, selective degree programs online to students globally. We currently work with 3 schools on 4 different programs. We work with the University of Southern California on a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master’s of Social Work, Georgetown University on a Master’s in Nursing degree and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on an Online MBA.

While at 2tor, I’ve led the strategy, design, and implementation of a dozen websites for some of the nation’s top tier universities, all of them WordPress. We love WordPress and use it to power all of our marketing sites. During my talk, “WordPress for Education: How to build a kickass .edu site” I’ll be sharing many of the lessons we’ve learned developing websites for universities in the past 3+ years.

You can learn more about me at Marcuscohn.com, or visit 2tor.com to learn more about what we do. See you all in a few days.

Sponsor Spotlight: SlideRocket

I would like to thank WordCamp LA for the opportunity to provide you with a little sponsorship support. As an avid blogger and online marketer, I appreciate that the WordCamps are a remarkable place to get together and share ideas on web strategy, design and development. SlideRocket looks forward to helping out in the future and at WordCamps in your sister cities (see you in Portland!). And if you’d like to use SlideRocket for your WordCamp presentation just hit us on Twitter @SlideRocket and we’ll set you up with a complimentary SlideRocket Pro account. There is also a robust free version of SlideRocket that you can give a try.

SlideRocket is an online presentation program and we know our UI really makes a difference for our customers. They demand the ability to craft presentations that are dynamic, easily shared, handle all media types, and play perfectly on all devices and operating systems. And customers certainly enjoy the presentation analytics, which are akin to web analytics in tracking which slides your audience views and how long.

As web designers and developers I think you’ll appreciate the simplicity of posting presentations to websites and blogs using just a short embed code, and that the presentations automatically update as you modify them, with no files sitting on your server. You can pack presentations with images, audio, video, YouTube, live Twitter feeds or whatever, and they still play perfectly. And sharing presentations on Facebook, Twitter, email or really anywhere is just a matter of sharing a URL rather than a file – it’s a link that you control, that you can turn off at any time, and dictate who is able to view it.

After party at Brennans Pub

Since we finally locked in the after party venue I’d though I would announce it here! While the last two WordCamp after-parties have been at The Custom Hotel, I though I would change it up a bit this year and head over the the famous Brennans Pub; known for their turtle races every Thursday night.

The after party will start promptly after the last session and closing announcements. We are looking into a free shuttle ride to and from the Custom Hotel and Brennans, so for those who are coming in from out-of-town need not worry about LA’s pricey taxi’s. More info on that soon

If you’ve got any other question or comments, leave them below.

Oh, and like the last two years, yes, there will be a few free drinks (and possibly appetizers — since Brennans has a full kitchen).

Developers Day

A lot have people have been asking about Sunday the 11th, which has been shown as developers day. There is no additional cost to attend Sundays event, but there is a limited availability compared to Saturdays event. We’ve only got seating for 50 people, so I will have a sign up form for dev day. Though as stated by the name, this day is reserved for the more advanced users.

We are in the process, of changing dev day from a less un-conference day to hosting a few speakers and break-out sessions. I’ll have the announcement of speakers in the coming days.

Speakers, Sponsors and Tickets, oh my.

Well, less than a week after opening tickets sales for WordCamp we are reaching the 100 ticket sale point. We also sold out the early WordBird tickets in less than six hours! But don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of general admission tickets left before we sell those out.

I’d also like to thank all the speakers who’ve submitted their presentation who are now listed on the speaker page (presentation info coming soon), with room for a few more…

Also a quick shout out to the few sponsors who already followed through with their kind contributions. We thank you. But we are still looking for more, so if you are interested please contact us soon.

I hope most of you are headed to the now sold out WordCamp in SF, if not, be sure to grab a ticket for LA before they sell out.

It’s official, a date has been set for WordCampLA!

If you follow us on Twitter, are on our mailing list, or attended camp in the past two years then you are one of the first to receive this announcement!

So what’s the big news? Well, if you read the title then you now know we’ve set a date for this year’s WordCampLA. Although we are still five months away, summer tends to fly by so we’ve secured the venue. Leaving us plenty of time to secure awesome speakers and sponsors for another great event.

So, can we plan anything?

Yes! I personally opened up speaker and sponsor submissions on the 2011 site.

So, when is it?

WordCampLA will be held the same weekend as the last two camps were held. That’s the second weekend in September, the 10th to be exact (of twenty eleven) 1.

Where is it?

Just like 2009 and 2010, WordCampLA has been graced with an awesome venue thanks to the Studio Arts – Media Emphasis department of Loyola Marymount. We’ll be holding the event at Seaver Hall 100 & 200, that means we will be hosting two tracks.

Want More?

Just follow us on Twitter, sign up for the newsletter and/or the 2011 feedburner feed.

Thanks,
Austin Passy

1Please note that tickets aren’t going to go on sale until some time in July.

Poll: When would you choose to host WordCamp

The last two years in a row we’ve held WordCamp the second weekend of September, problem is that it follows Labor Day weekend and the start of school (in our case this applies because its taken place at LMU).

Last year our camp was also the same date as Mid-Atlantics (which is splitting into two different camps this year). We have also be followed each of the last two years by WordCamp Portland, and now are following WordCamp San Fransisco’s move from mid to late May into the middle of August for a four day event.

So many great camps happening this year, and I hope to make LA‘s that much better from the last two. I just want to pick the right date this year so as to not step on any ones feet and allow for some kick ass WordPress people to fly in from all over the US.
